Besides a dazzling historical center, Salvador also has a long city beach stretching for kilometers in the Barra district, where during Mardi Gras, after Rio, the biggest and, according to the Bahians, most magnificent party of Brazil is held. With its many good restaurants, small bars, and the three colonial forts along the coast, of which Forte de Santo Antonio da Barra with its lighthouse jumps out the most, it’s also a nice place to absorb some culture.
The village Itapua is less touristy than Salvador and can be reached from Barra by bus or taxi in half an hour. In addition to its beautiful and especially grand beaches, it’s within walking distance of Parque Metropolitano do Abaeté. A magnificent park of 1,200 m2 with a lake, which according to tradition, was created by the tears of an Indian girl, who was forced to part from her foreign lover. Considering the many holiday romances that happen between Brazilian women and foreign men, it is a beautiful myth we gladly believe.

Sympathetic artists run this hostel that simply radiates art and culture. Of course it depends on your taste, but the interior design is extraordinary. Never before have I seen a so lavishly decorated hostel as Open House Barra. With its spacious rooms, samba lessons, great breakfast, and welcome caipirinha, the hostel truly deserves a recommendation. It’s a 5 minute walk from the beach.
