There are no less than thirteen churches in this former mining town. They were built in the baroque architectural style and extravagantly decorated with gold. This is the burden of proof of the enormous wealth this city once knew. The Museu da Inconfidência showcases that the city not only has a wealthy, but also a bloody history. Ouro Prêto has been built from scratch by thousands of slaves and often under abominable conditions. A trip to the former gold mines will prove this.
